About Janine Marson and the Tom Thomson project
I started this artistic journey on July 17, 2015 in Algonquin Park. I felt compelled to paint and document this beautiful place I call home. The idyllic rugged landscapes of Thomson's day remain, better than ever and I urge you, during Canada's 150th birthday, to set a goal to see them yourself.
I set myself a goal to create 100 8x10 oil on birch panels, with a deadline of November 2016. I made it, but not before exploring Canoe Lake as the guest of lake lease holders such as Holly Stewart and Mary Dwan King who gave me such a great sense of local history. I stood on the spot where Thomson painted The Jack Pine and where he had worked as a fire ranger at Grand Lake Achary. I went on a 5 day interior canoe trip into the backcountry of Algonquin Park and weekends and evenings and days off were spent on the side of a road or in the bush battling bugs, snow, sleet, wind and rain, my trusty palette and paint box by my side. I stepped beyond my comfort zone for this project and I learned that like Tom, I can paint with passion, purpose and vigor. It was a labour of love and a wonderful journey of discovery.
I studied art and graduated with a B.A. in Fine Art from the University of Guelph and received a 3 year diploma in Design Art-Creative Art from Georgian College of Applied Arts and Technology. Teaching art and encouraging others to find their creative spirit brings me great joy which I conduct out of my studio and for the Haliburton School of the Art and Design for many years. I have won several awards and actively participate in arts and culture events in my hometown of Huntsville, Ontario. I am also a trained picture framer and provide custom framing services at North Art, Huntsville, Ontario. Click on North Art below to go to our website. Stop in anytime if you have questions about framing or want custom framing done.
