Project number 3
I am finally getting the chance to make good on a promise I made to Lawrence Nickle many years ago. On a visit to his studio he showed me his paintings and we ate stew and talked of art, life and love. Towards the end of our visit he looked straight at me as only Lawrence could do and he said, "Promise me you will go and paint Lake Superior"...I obliged with a half hearted answer knowing it would be difficult for me to do raising a son and working full time. He repeated the request more earnestly this time, "PROMISE me you WILL go".. YES Lawrence I WILL go. No other answer would do and he seemed satisfied and we parted ways. I never saw him again and he passed away a few years after that meeting. Promises are important to keep and now I get to fulfill the one I had made to him. The watercolour sketches and oil on birch panels will serve as the impetus for a larger body of work that will be shown in galleries 2 years down the pipe. My boss and friend Sheila has agreed to close North Art Supplies for a week from June 3-June 11 for us to all go on this adventure to honour Lawrence. The Superior light and spirit of the rugged northern shore will be wonder to my eyes and I shall think of Lawrence as we paint!
